How the cars are kept

A rental on a Family Island is only as good as the maintenance behind it. There is no depot to swap you into down here, so the fleet is looked after before it goes out, not after it fails.

Air conditioning that works

Every vehicle is air conditioned and the system is checked before it goes out. On a Cat Island afternoon this is not a luxury feature.

Serviced on the island

Oil, brakes, belts and tyres are kept up here rather than deferred to a mainland garage, because a breakdown at Port Howe is nobody's idea of a holiday.

Cleaned between rentals

Inside and out, every time. Sand comes with the territory, but you should not inherit the last renter's share of it.

Fuel efficient by design

We buy Honda, Toyota and Nissan for a reason. Fuel on a Family Island costs what it costs, so the fleet is chosen to use less of it.

Automatic transmission

The fleet is automatic, which matters more than usual when you are also concentrating on driving to the left.

Free delivery at pickup

Collection from New Bight Airport and the New Bight anchorage is free. Tell us your arrival and we will arrange the handover.

Straightforward pricing

The rate you are quoted is the rate you pay. We do not believe in surprising you with hidden fees, unexpected insurance upcharges, or tourist taxes when you hand the keys back.

Local knowledge included

GPS is not always your best friend down here. Along with the keys, we will give you honest advice on which roads are currently washed out, how to get to the best beaches, and where to find gas.

Which one suits you

Three sizes cover nearly every trip to Cat Island. If you are between two of them, take the larger one — the roads are more of a factor than the parking.

Sedan

Two people, light bags

Sedan

Cheapest to run and easy to park at the settlements. Fine for the Queen's Highway and the main side roads down to the beaches.

Midsize SUV

A couple or small family exploring

Midsize SUV

The most popular choice. Extra ground clearance for the rougher tracks to the quieter beaches, and room for coolers and snorkel gear.

Van

Groups, regatta crews, families of six or more

Van

Seven or eight seats and space for everybody's luggage, which is cheaper and simpler than taking two smaller cars.

Driving here: the short version

  • Drive on the left. Junctions are where visitors forget, so take the first day slowly.
  • The Queen's Highway runs the length of the island and almost everything branches off it. You will not get badly lost.
  • Fuel stations are few and keep island hours. Fill up when you pass one rather than when the gauge tells you to.
  • Side roads to the best beaches are unpaved. They are drivable, but take them at walking pace in a sedan.
  • Watch for free-roaming goats, crabs after rain, and potholes that appear overnight.
  • Speed limits are 45 mph on the open road and 25 mph through the settlements. Seatbelts are required.
  • There are no meters, garages or marked bays — parking is wherever you can safely pull off the road.

Where those roads actually go is covered on the Cat Island guide.

Rental questions

What do I need to rent a car?

A valid driver's licence from your home country and a credit card for the deposit. Visitors may drive on a foreign licence in the Bahamas for up to three months.

Is there a minimum age?

Drivers must be 21 or over. Drivers under 25 may be asked for a larger deposit depending on the vehicle.

Can you collect me from the airport?

Yes. Pickup at New Bight Airport and the New Bight anchorage is free — send us your flight or arrival details when you book.

How is fuel handled?

Vehicles go out with a full tank and should come back full. There is a fuel station within a few minutes of the office.

What if my flight is delayed?

Tell us as soon as you know. Flights to Cat Island shift often and we plan around it — you will not lose the vehicle because a plane ran late.

Do you take credit cards?

Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover. Ask us if you would prefer to settle another way.

All frequently asked questions

Not sure which one? We will tell you.

Say how many people are coming and what you plan to do, and we will point you at the right vehicle rather than the most expensive one.
