Frequently asked questions
Licences, deposits, fuel, insurance, driving on the left and what happens if a flight is delayed. If your question is not here, ask us.
The questions we get asked most. If yours is not here, ask us — we would rather answer it than have you guess.
Booking and payment
How do I book a vehicle?
Use the booking page to check what is available for your dates, or call, WhatsApp or email us. We confirm the details with you before you arrive.
Which cards do you accept?
Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover. If you would prefer to settle another way, ask us.
Is a deposit required?
Yes. A refundable security deposit is taken against the vehicle and released after it is returned and checked. The amount depends on the vehicle and is confirmed when you book.
Can I change or cancel a booking?
Yes — see our cancellation and refund policy for notice periods. Flights to Cat Island move often and we plan around it, so tell us as soon as you know.
Drivers and licences
What licence do I need?
A valid driver’s licence from your home country. Visitors may drive in the Bahamas on a foreign licence for up to three months. Bring the physical licence — a photo of it is not enough.
Is there a minimum age?
Drivers must be 21 or over. Drivers under 25 may be asked for a larger deposit depending on the vehicle.
Can somebody else drive the car?
Only drivers named on the rental agreement are covered. Adding a second driver is straightforward — tell us at pickup and bring their licence.
Pickup and return
Do you collect from the airport?
Yes, and it is free. We collect from New Bight Airport and the New Bight anchorage. Send us your flight or arrival details when you book.
What if my flight is delayed or cancelled?
Let us know as soon as you can. Domestic schedules shift regularly and we are used to it — a late plane will not cost you the vehicle.
How does fuel work?
The vehicle goes out with a full tank and should come back full. There is a fuel station a few minutes from the office.
Can I take the car on the mail boat or to another island?
No. Vehicles stay on Cat Island.
Driving on Cat Island
Which side of the road?
The left, as in the UK. Most vehicles here are left-hand drive, which takes a little getting used to. Take the first day slowly, especially at junctions.
What are the roads like?
The Queen’s Highway is paved and runs the length of the island. Side roads down to the beaches are mostly unpaved but drivable — take them slowly in a sedan, or book an SUV if you plan to use a lot of them.
Do I need a 4×4?
Rarely. An SUV with normal ground clearance covers everything most visitors want to reach.
Is there anywhere to get help if something goes wrong?
Call us. It is a small island, we are centrally placed in The Bight, and we will come to you.
The island
How do I get to Cat Island?
Fly from Nassau to New Bight (TBI) — about 35 minutes — or to Arthur’s Town (ATC) at the north end. The mail boat also serves the island. See the island guide for detail.
Where should I stay?
Gilbert’s Inn is in The Bight, five minutes from the airport, with sixteen air-conditioned rooms and suites.
What is worth seeing?
The Hermitage on Mount Alvernia, the beaches at Fernandez Bay, Old Bight and Greenwood, and the settlements up and down the highway. The island guide has the full list.
